Born in Colombia and raised in Florida, Viviana has been creating art as long as she can remember. The majority of her technique is self-taught through her natural exploration and keen observation of her subject matter and through the application of the medium chosen.
Viviana was exposed to art at an early age, as her father is also an artist. She was formally trained in fine art at the beginning of her college career at the University of Florida, but she changed her major to Geography and, strangely enough, she continued her training in a more technical way: drawing maps.
As an artist, she has been honing her skills and evolving her style for many years through experimentation and artistic workshops.
Viviana's work is representational, impressionistic and, at times, surreal, depending on the subject, the theme of the piece and her mood at any given moment.
She has had her work exhibited at galleries in Roswell, Alpharetta and in Suwanee and had a solo exhibition of thirteen pieces at the Coca Cola building in Atlanta (Limitless Possibilities exhibit). She regularly creates original works on commission, and sells existing original pieces, paper and canvas reproductions, as well as various other products.
As a proud mother of three sons, a teacher of hundreds, and as an artist of the world, Viviana has lived in the Atlanta area for 36 years, where she enjoys the gorgeous changes of all four seasons and the many cultural events the city has to offer year round. She is fortunate to be surrounded by her supportive family and life-long friends.
Viviana primarily uses watercolor because it is spontaneous and unpredictable. It is the medium that feels most in the 'now'. The end result is always a delightful surprise, no matter how much planning goes into a piece. Watercolor is a medium that is simple and subtle but, for the artist, it involves the ability to be flexible, open and patient. It has a mind of its own, so to speak, and sometimes it is difficult to tame, but it is soft, graceful and fluid, and it's always changing until it finally decides to be still as it completely dries.
Viviana also paints in oil, which is completely different; almost backwards in comparison, but enjoyable due to the ability to use heavy, vibrant and rich color. It is a very forgiving medium that blends perfectly to create awesome and realistic effects.
Viviana also enjoys drawing in charcoal, color pencils and oil pastels. She explores different mediums, depending on the subject at hand and typically chooses vibrant colors and dramatic contrast in her creations.
Viviana is mostly inspired by nature and beauty. The random, seemingly imperfect lines of nature could not be more perfect, actually, whether it be a field of wild flowers or the crooked, odd shaped beak of a bird. It is all there to serve some purpose; no two are the same in nature. The inspiration can come over time or in an instant... but it's ever present.
Viviana enjoys painting all types of animals (wild and tame), people, landscapes, flowers in nature and as still-life, or just anything that catches her eye and that she finds to be particularly intriguing.
Recently, she has been painting more expressive and somewhat theme-based surrealistic pieces. The experience and challenge of creating these pieces has been surprisingly refreshing and liberating. Although art is personal in its meaning and interpretation, it is also meant to be shared so that is has power. Power to stand on its own.
